The Pit Bull: An American Sacrificial Animal
I published a thought piece on the (shelter) pit bull as a vessel through which American society externalizes its own violence.
You can read it on my Substack!
It explores how ancient animal sacrifices didn’t disappear, but modernized. Animals were sacrificed to redeem people and societies. I argue that today we treat pit bulls especially like mythological creatures, proxy bodies onto which our society can project our fears, and sins. These dogs are then destroyed through policy, media fearmongering, and in the shelter system.
