SHELTER-RELATED ACTIVITIES FOR CHILDREN

These are free resources I created to support our youngest shelter advocates. They can be great tools to support your child as they learn about empathy, showing up, or using their voice or skills to advocate for shelter animals.

CREATE AN ADOPTION PROFILE

In this PDF, you can create an adoption profile for a shelter dog. Download the PDF and print it.

Color the dog’s face, add a flower crown or a hat, or anything you like. You can glue things like stickers.

Then write the details that identify your dog, and the story of the dog. For example where they come from, what happened to them, their personality, what they love or dislike, and the kind of home they might like.

Check these for inspiration!

CREATE THANK YOU NOTES AND ADOPTION FLYERS

There are many ways you can help animals at your local shelter. You can organize a lemonade stand, fundraiser, a food drive, create cat toys or write thank you notes for adopters, a paint portraits of adoptable animals… whichever you decide to do, you can download this PDF, print it, and attach the thank you card to your donation.

You can also print the adoption flyers and hang them at school or your local store for example, to encourage others to adopt their next pet.

ADVOCATE FOR PIT BULL-TYPE DOGS

Some people are working hard at changing the way we see pit bulls, so that the dogs and their families are treated more fairly. Like any dog, most pit bulls are very sweet, and they deserve the same chances as any other dog. Sophie Gamand is an artist who photographs shelter pit bulls wearing flower crowns she made for them. She calls her project “Pit Bull Flower Power”. She wants to show the pit bulls’ sweet nature, so that people stop being afraid of them, and consider adopting them.

Download this PDF and print it. This dog is called Blossom and she waited for a family for many years at the shelter. Many people were afraid of her because she was a pit bull, but Blossom was a very sweet and loving dog who just wanted a family to call her own.

Color Blossom’s portrait, and write your own message to support pit bulls.

CREATE FRIENDSHIP BRACELETS TO SUPPORT PIT BULLS

Download this PDF, print it. Color the bracelets, write your own messages.

Then with the help of an adult, cut the bracelets from the page. Wrap the bracelet around your wrist and secure it with a piece of tape.
