MINI WISDOMS FROM SHELTER DOG

AN ORACLE DECK INSPIRED BY SHELTER DOGS.

This mini oracle deck was created with animal caregivers and guardians in mind. You can pull a card for yourself, to support your relationship with your own companion animal, or even for a shelter dog you are helping.

Each card features a real shelter dog I photographed in the past, paired with a mini wisdom you can use to guide you through your day, through a moment or a decision.

Once longing to be seen, the shelter dogs featured in this deck are now our teachers and gentle guides.

HOW TO USE YOUR DECK

Do what feels right! The good news is that there is no right or wrong way to use this deck. You can pull a card for the day, the week, or for a specific question you have at any given moment. The most important is to take a moment to connect deeply with the intention you want to set, opening yourself up to the message you are about to receive.

1. Formulate a clear, open-ended question. Avoid yes/no questions.

Here are prompts you can use, but feel free to come up with your own:

  • What needs my attention today?

  • What energy do I need to carry into today?

  • What wisdom can guide me through this moment?

  • How can I care for myself in this struggle?

  • What is the lesson hidden in this hardship?

  • What am I not seeing clearly?

  • Where should I place my focus?

  • How can I reconnect with myself?

  • Where is safety for me right now?

  • What forgotten part of me needs honoring?

If you are reading for your relationship with your dog, a question could be:

  • What needs my attention in my relationship with my dog?

  • What is something my dog is trying to help me with?

  • When I struggle with my dog, what can I remember to focus on?

  • What is something I might be overlooking that could help my relationship with my dog?

If you are pulling a card for a shelter dog you are helping, here are some ideas:

  • What is something that could help (dog’s name) find a home?

  • How could I best support (dog’s name) while they wait for a home?

  • What is one thing (dog’s name) would like us to know?

2. Shuffle the deck while focusing on your question, channeling your energy into the deck until the cards feel ready.

3. When you are ready, pull a card and take a moment to reflect on the wisdom offered by your shelter dog oracle companion.

Sometimes, a card or two will fall out or jump out of the deck while you shuffle. I like to see these as powerful nudges, and I will read those instead of pulling my own card—trust the Universe!

4. Keep your card in mind throughout the day. Carry its wisdom. Notice and reflect on what this brings up for you.

You can just observe what comes up for you, notice what you might have been overlooking. Take a moment to journal and write some thoughts, or make a plan to include more of that wisdom in your interactions.

Some people like pulling 3 cards. For example (but you can design your own pattern):

  • Past, Present, Future: Card 1 is the past, Card 2 is the present, and Card 3 is the future.

  • Situation, Action, Outcome: Card 1 is the situation, Card 2 is the action to take, and Card 3 is the potential outcome.

  • Internal, External, Path Forward: Card 1 is the internal aspect, Card 2 is the external circumstance, and Card 3 is the path to follow.

May this deck provide you the safe space you need to explore your inner world!
