JOURNALING PROMPT FOR ANIMAL PEOPLE

Are you someone who works in animal welfare? A shelter worker, volunteer, a vet technician or veterinarian, a dog trainer? I have been compiling journaling prompts for you!

I’ve always felt resistant to the idea of journaling. Putting words to paper always felt like a huge undertaking. I would reluctantly start, and soon I was on my 10th page and feeling more and more activated. It never felt like a release.

Until I decided to write my journal as if I loved and cared for myself the way I love and care for others. With courage and empathy. I resisted the urge to self-loathe and criticize myself. I resisted the urge to relive the trauma in writing, and bask in the anger. Instead, I used my journaling as a nudge toward self-love and comfort. It’s been a beautiful reframe!

So with that, I would love to invite you to take a piece of paper and your favorite pen. It works better if you put pen to paper (instead of typing), I promise! Because the gesture alone helps rewire your brain and it encourages you to slow down.

Grab the paper and pen and either time yourself, or give yourself a page limit. I like to limit my writing to 3 pages, 1 page if I am really not feeling it. You could even journal by drawing, if words are not your thing. Or dancing! Whatever mode of expression feels truest to you.

Read this prompt, and let the writing begin. No judgement, no overthinking. Let whatever wants to emerge, emerge. And observe with love and tenderness.

Moving forward, if you decide to commit to journaling further, think about ways you could make it special. Perhaps you could get a beautiful journal for this, a special pen. You could place them in a special place at home, a drawer, a box, an altar. I encourage you to make your journaling a sacred practice. You could even light a candle or incense next time you journal, or play some soothing music in the background.

This is your time to sit with your soul, and let them provide a space of tenderness to your aching heart.
